Bottom of Form
Class (IX-E.M): Teaching Poetry – THE CLOUD          By P.B.Shelley
Duration: 45 mins
In six stanzas of between twelve and eighteen lines each, the first-person narrator of “The Cloud,” who is the cloud itself, describes its various forms and functions throughout its life cycle. The first stanza captures the range of the cloud’s moods. Gentle, it brings rain to nourish the earth’s flowers and shade for the leaves of trees. The cloud can also be ferocious; however, bringing hail that whitens the ground, followed by thunderstorms.

Rain rain
falls on the street,
mud in puddles
cleaning my feet.
Thunder thunder
rumble and roar,
close the windows
and lock the door.
Clouds clouds
black and gray,
heavy with water
to drop all day.
Sun sun
is breaking through,
clouds are moving,
the rain stops too.
Rainbow rainbow
across the sky,
see-through colours
to tickle my eyes.

When I see clouds in the sky,
All big and puffy and white,
When I see clouds in the sky,
The weather is sunny and bright.
White clouds, white clouds,
White clouds up in the sky.
White clouds, white clouds,
White clouds, puffy and dry.
When I see clouds in the sky,
All big and solid and gray,
When I see gray clouds in the sky,
The weather is rainy all day.
Gray clouds, gray clouds,
Gray clouds up in the sky.
Gray clouds, gray clouds,
Dropping rain from up high

The clouds are passing by,
The clouds are passing by,
Heigh-ho, just watch them go,
The coulds are passing by.
The clouds are passing by,
Way up in the sky,
Sometimes fast, sometimes slow,
The clouds are passing by.

What’s fluffy white and floats up high,
Like a pile of cotton in the sky?
And when the wind blows hard and strong,
What very gently floats along?
What brings the rain, what brings the snow,
That showers down on us below?
When you look up high in the sky,
What is that thing you see float by?
